Much of welfare spending could become invested, if we would direct some of that spending toward education and training to prevent people from becoming public dependents in the first place.

Those who, through no fault of their own, must depend on the rest of us – the poverty stricken, the disabled, the elderly, all those with true need – can rest assured that the social safety net of programs they depend on are exempt from any cuts.

A New Kind of Bondage June 29, 2009

I believe many in Washington, over the years, have been more dedicated to making needy people government-dependent rather than independent. They’ve created a new kind of bondage, because regardless of how honest their intention in the beginning, those they set out to help soon became clients essential to the well-being of those who administered the programs.

We have long since committed ourselves, as a people, to help those among us who cannot take care of themselves. But the federal government has proven to be the costliest and most inefficient provider of such help we could possibly have.

A strong economy returns the greatest good to the black population. It returns a benefit greater than that provided by specific Federal programs.

Mitt Romney said, “Conservatism, Republicanism, it’s a philosophy of strength. We believeMitt Romney, Strong Economy in a strong military. We believe in a strong economy. We believe in strong families and values. We believe in the American people. … The American people, of course, are the source of our strength – hard working, educated, risk taking, opportunity loving, God fearing American people. People who are willing to sacrifice for their families. People who will give of themselves for freedom, who love America. They’ve always been the source of our strength and they always will be!”

According to the Club for Growth, Mitt Romney worked to decrease the need for welfare in Massachusetts:

“As governor, Romney pushed for important changes to Massachusetts expansive welfare system. Although federal welfare reform passed in 1995, Massachusetts was woefully behind, relying on a waiver to bypass many of the legislation’s important requirements. Romney fought for legislation that would bring Massachusetts’ welfare system up to date with federal standards by increasing the number of hours each week recipients must work and establishing a five-year limit for receiving benefits.”

On education, he said the following:

“At some point, I think America – and, importantly, the minority communities – are going to say, ‘it’s time to split with our friends, the unions and the Democratic Party, and put our kids first here.’ Unequal educational opportunity is the civil rights issue of our time.”

The Great Society grows greater every day—greater in cost, greater in inefficiency and greater in waste. Now this is not to quarrel with its humanitarian goals or deny that it can achieve those goals. But, I do deny that it offers the only—or even the best—method of achieving those goals.
